Recap, Chapter Summary + Review: The House in the Cerulean Sea by T J. Klune

The parking lot got approved but thanks to the work of locals and volunteers the house still remains. Linus, a man accustomed to rules and structure and proper behavior, is wary of the children at first, but he begins to fall in love with them and their guardian as he spends more time on the island. There is romantic tension between Arthur and Linus, which Linus isn’t sure how to deal with. He also discovers that Arthur and Werner were in a romantic relationship, which explains Werner’s deep interest in the orphanage. Built in 1911, this was the first mansion in Beverly Hills.

About The Author

When Linus goes to investigate, Arthur tells Linus that he grew up in a DICOMY orphanage and was abused. When he tried to ask the DICOMY for help, the master of the orphanage intercepted the letter and locked Arthur in the cellar. Arthur burned out cellar trying unsuccessfully to get out. He was eventually released when the DICOMY came to investigate months later.

He quickly realizes that he is miserable and grieving the people he left behind, so he makes plans to return. First, though, he steals files from DICOMY to expose the abuses and failures he’s seen in his 17 years as a caseworker. Once he’s prepared and the orphanage is safe, Linus quits his job, packs his meager belongings, and returns to Marsyas Island. After the children hold a brief conference—and communicate a number of adorable demands—Linus is welcomed home. He and Arthur begin a romantic relationship and petition to adopt all six of the children officially. The book ends with an Epilogue in which the mayor of the town notifies them of an unregistered child in need of a home.

Vineland Drive In LA’s Host For A Night at The Drive In

This is an unabashedly optimistic and well-meaning story. It’ll warm your heart and perhaps even bring tears to your eyes. If you’re in the mood for an all-good-vibes-type of narrative mixed in with creatures of lore, then this is a good book to consider.

The Eames House

Chauncey is an amorphous blog with tentacles, basically a monster. And Sal is a shapeshifter who can become a small Pomeranian, with the special ability of being able to give others shapeshifting abilities by biting them. He has been in many orphanages and was abused previously.

You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion. There are so many incredible famous houses in Los Angeles. Some of the houses are famous because of the architecture while others are famous for being used in movies and tv shows. There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special. Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by.

The homes are a museum dedicated to the settlement and development of Southern California in its first 100 years. There are special events throughout the year that you can attend including Christmas movie screenings with Street Food Cinema in December. I have not been able to confirm if the grounds are still open to the public during COVID 19.

At times I found it a little too black-and-white for my tastes, with saintly “good” characters, villainous “bad” characters and pretty much no one in-between. While sweet and upbeat, The House in the Cerulean Sea was lacking in dramatic tension for me, since it was always quite clear how the story would play out. One day, he's given a secret assignment to assess a special orphanage on the island of Marsyas, run by a man named Arthur Parnassus, who has secrets of his own.

Also, if you are a cat-lover, I’m pleased to let you know that Calliope the cat makes for a pleasingly feisty side-character in this book. The House in the Cerulean Sea is a fun, warm-hearted ride. If you like upbeat stories, a little romance, fantastical creatures and other magical beings and just a touch of humor, there’s a lot to like about The House in the Cerulean Sea. He would do anything to keep the children safe, even if it means the world will burn. I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free.

He changed an existing house and turned it into something truly unique. The neighbors may not have been thrilled with what the home became but it looks like something really fun to see in person. Linus himself is a serious, solitary man with a preference for order and clarity.

Among the six unique children living there, one of them is Lucy, short for Lucifer, who just happens to be the Antichrist. This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours. It is called the research house because it was built with a loan from a patron. A fire destroyed most of the house in 1963 and was rebuilt by Neutra’s son with the Dad’s oversight.

Arthur and Linus intend to formally adopt all the children, including David. The book closes with Arthur and Linus about to be married. The Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Llyod Wright for Aline Barnsdall though she quickly became disillusioned with the home and donated it to the city of LA.

As soon as Linus's recommendation to keep the orphanage open is accepted, he know it's where he wants to be. Later, Linus submits an anonymous whistleblower report about the DICOMY's discriminatory practices which results in the EUM all stepping down and being replaced. He also tells his story to a reporter who plans to publish an expose. Soon, Helen brings David, an undocumented yeti boy who needs a home, to the island.
