The House in the Cerulean Sea TJ Klune

house in the cerulean sea

As an adult, Arthur requested to be put in charge of the orphanage because he wanted to turn it into a place where kids could truly get help. The required that he not tell anyone about being a Phoenix. He also starts to develop romantic feelings toward Arthur, which are reciprocated. As Linus sends back reports to Extremely Upper Management, they are dismayed when they see how sympathetic Linus has become towards Arthur and the orphanage.

This tension is exacerbated by the extremity of the children’s magical natures. One of the children, Lucy, is listed in his files as the Antichrist, or the son of the Devil. Among the other children are a wyvern, a gnome, a forest sprite, a shapeshifter, and a gelatinous, tentacled child named Chauncey.

Leslie Rodríguez's Reviews > The House in the Cerulean Sea

He will be sent to the orphanage for a month, during which he will send thorough weekly reports. Mr. Werner, a young, handsome member of Extremely Upper Management, warns Linus to “beware” and to leave no detail out of his reports. An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place―and realizing that family is yours.

Not only is the beautiful craftsman style Gamble house an amazing place to visit for architecture fans, but movie fans will appreciate it too. The garage was used as Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future and the living room shown above was used in Zathura. I have visited the house for free on two different occasions. You can visit it for free on the Museums of the Arroyo Day or during the City of Pasadena’s ArtNight. This was one of the first homes I ever toured in LA and fell in love with learning about the history of the unique homes in the area. You can read more about my visits to the Gamble House here.

In the 1940s his wife, Betty left their 31 room ranch and the land to the California State Parks. This is another home that is still on my to-visit list. Linus becomes more confident, more willing to form emotional attachments, and more outspoken in his defense of children, magical and otherwise.

Mr. Werner reveals to Linus that Arthur is actually a very rare magical being as well, a Phoenix. He gives Linus a key to a burned-out cellar on the island to show Linus how potentially dangerous Arthur can be. Linus Baker is a by-the-book case worker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He's tasked with determining whether six dangerous magical children are likely to bring about the end of the world.

Ownership of the house remained with the Lane family until 1955.

He is also able to break through to Sal, a traumatized shapeshifter recovering from previous abuse. The orphanage is located on Marsyas Island, isolated from civilization other than a small town on the mainland. It is populated by Arthur Parnassus, the children, and Zoe, an island sprite whose powers are tremendous and closely linked to the island. The town on the mainland is openly hostile towards magical beings, and relations between the townspeople and the orphanage are strained.

He is cautious in life and careful with his words, making him particularly well suited for the inflexible structure of DICOMY. Early in the novel, he is unexpectedly summoned to a personal meeting with Extremely Upper Management, elusive figures that are often whispered about but rarely seen. At the meeting, Linus is given top secret clearance to review an unusual orphanage run by Arthur Parnassus. It lodges six children who are considered “extreme” cases.

Linus's assignment is to assess a special orphanage on the island of Marsyas. The master of the orphanage is a man named Arthur Parnassus. There are six children living in the orphanage there, one of whom is called "Lucy" (short for Lucifer), who is the Antichrist. Linus Baker is a lonely case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth ("DICOMY"), a governmental organization which manages orphaned magical beings who are minors. His job consists of visiting orphanages to check up on them and then writing up a report.

Some of these children have powers such as telekinesis, and some are from non-human species, many of which we would consider mythological. Linus’s job is to follow up on incident reports and make suggestions regarding the fate of the children and the homes. There's also Zoe Chapelwhite, an undocumented, adult island sprite who has lived on the island since before the orphanage. She helps to take care of the children in an unofficial capacity.

Linus is scared of the children at first, but soon sees that they act much like other kids. Arthur tells Linus that people see the kids as being threats, but actually the kids can be anything they choose to be. Meanwhile, the kids are scared that Linus will take away their home, since he will be making a recommendation whether to shut down the orphanage or not. The Sowden House, like The Derby House, was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926.

The hollyhock was Aline’s favorite flower and was used as a theme throughout the house. Even if you cannot tour the home it is visible from the park and the city views are wonderful as well. I recommend stopping by for at least a quick visit if you can. Once back in the city, Linus brashly defends Arthur, the children, and the home itself to Extremely Upper Management. He implicates Management in the discrimination and abuses of the system. Even so, they accept his recommendation that the home remain open.

So, the statement that typography is constantly key when creating a graphic design project is incorrect. Graphic designers have the freedom to choose whether or not to incorporate typography based on the specific project requirements and artistic vision.

Graphic design is a vast and diverse field, often sparking debates among art critics. While many experts and artists argue that graphic design is a legitimate art form, some individuals disagree with this notion. The varying opinions and perspectives on graphic design fuel these discussions and debates.

Or, if you’d rather study online, there’s three different time zones to choose from so you can study whenever works best for you. In these programs, students will learn color theory, graphic design, and its history, as well as how to use software like Illustrator and Photoshop. New production methods led to the separation of the design of a communication medium (e.g., a poster) from its actual production. In 1922 typographer William A. Dwiggins coined the term graphic design to identify the emerging field. Graphic designers often work closely with other professionals such as marketing and advertising specialists, web developers, printers and publishers.

Graphic design is not a field for those who are not good at English.

In order to create efficient workflows and meet deadlines, it is essential for designers to be able to use computers effectively. This means having a strong understanding of design software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Whether it is creating a new logo for a company, designing a website, or creating an advertising campaign, graphic designers are expected to come up with creative and effective solutions. This means that they need to have a good understanding of both art and design.

While creativity is an important aspect of graphic design, it is not the only skill required to be successful in this field. Graphic designers need to have a strong understanding of their audience and the message they are trying to communicate. They must be able to translate this into a visual form that is both visually appealing and effective.

While it is possible to get by with a limited understanding of English, those who want to succeed in graphic design will need to be able to master the language. Those who are not able to do so will likely find themselves at a disadvantage when trying to find work or advance in their career. Those who are not good at using computers may find that they are drawn to other creative fields, such as photography or fine art. While these fields may also require the use of computers, they tend to be more forgiving to those who are not as technologically savvy.

Now, let’s dig into why this is the case and explore the true nature of graphic design. There is no one definitive answer to this question, as the math that game designers need to know will vary depending on the specific program or course they are taking. Artists who work in graphic design are typically able to use their creativity to come up with original and innovative solutions. They are also usually good at thinking outside the box and coming up with ideas that are outside the realm of what is typically expected. Designers who work in graphic design also need to have a good eye for detail and be able to take a concept and turn it into a reality.

Recap, Chapter Summary + Review: The House in the Cerulean Sea by T J. Klune

house in the cerulean sea

The parking lot got approved but thanks to the work of locals and volunteers the house still remains. Linus, a man accustomed to rules and structure and proper behavior, is wary of the children at first, but he begins to fall in love with them and their guardian as he spends more time on the island. There is romantic tension between Arthur and Linus, which Linus isn’t sure how to deal with. He also discovers that Arthur and Werner were in a romantic relationship, which explains Werner’s deep interest in the orphanage. Built in 1911, this was the first mansion in Beverly Hills.

About The Author

When Linus goes to investigate, Arthur tells Linus that he grew up in a DICOMY orphanage and was abused. When he tried to ask the DICOMY for help, the master of the orphanage intercepted the letter and locked Arthur in the cellar. Arthur burned out cellar trying unsuccessfully to get out. He was eventually released when the DICOMY came to investigate months later.

Leslie Rodríguez's Reviews > The House in the Cerulean Sea

He quickly realizes that he is miserable and grieving the people he left behind, so he makes plans to return. First, though, he steals files from DICOMY to expose the abuses and failures he’s seen in his 17 years as a caseworker. Once he’s prepared and the orphanage is safe, Linus quits his job, packs his meager belongings, and returns to Marsyas Island. After the children hold a brief conference—and communicate a number of adorable demands—Linus is welcomed home. He and Arthur begin a romantic relationship and petition to adopt all six of the children officially. The book ends with an Epilogue in which the mayor of the town notifies them of an unregistered child in need of a home.

This is an unabashedly optimistic and well-meaning story. It’ll warm your heart and perhaps even bring tears to your eyes. If you’re in the mood for an all-good-vibes-type of narrative mixed in with creatures of lore, then this is a good book to consider.

At times I found it a little too black-and-white for my tastes, with saintly “good” characters, villainous “bad” characters and pretty much no one in-between. While sweet and upbeat, The House in the Cerulean Sea was lacking in dramatic tension for me, since it was always quite clear how the story would play out. One day, he's given a secret assignment to assess a special orphanage on the island of Marsyas, run by a man named Arthur Parnassus, who has secrets of his own.

Also, if you are a cat-lover, I’m pleased to let you know that Calliope the cat makes for a pleasingly feisty side-character in this book. The House in the Cerulean Sea is a fun, warm-hearted ride. If you like upbeat stories, a little romance, fantastical creatures and other magical beings and just a touch of humor, there’s a lot to like about The House in the Cerulean Sea. He would do anything to keep the children safe, even if it means the world will burn. I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free.

He changed an existing house and turned it into something truly unique. The neighbors may not have been thrilled with what the home became but it looks like something really fun to see in person. Linus himself is a serious, solitary man with a preference for order and clarity.

Among the six unique children living there, one of them is Lucy, short for Lucifer, who just happens to be the Antichrist. This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours. It is called the research house because it was built with a loan from a patron. A fire destroyed most of the house in 1963 and was rebuilt by Neutra’s son with the Dad’s oversight.

Arthur and Linus intend to formally adopt all the children, including David. The book closes with Arthur and Linus about to be married. The Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Llyod Wright for Aline Barnsdall though she quickly became disillusioned with the home and donated it to the city of LA.

As soon as Linus's recommendation to keep the orphanage open is accepted, he know it's where he wants to be. Later, Linus submits an anonymous whistleblower report about the DICOMY's discriminatory practices which results in the EUM all stepping down and being replaced. He also tells his story to a reporter who plans to publish an expose. Soon, Helen brings David, an undocumented yeti boy who needs a home, to the island.

Modern Window Blinds and Shades

modern design window treatments

Bay and bow windows, on the other hand, are also broad and give plenty of room to look outdoors. But they also have some extra shelf or sill space that's perfect for decorations, family photos, and more. Depending on the size of your bay or bow window of choice, you can even set up a cushioned reading nook with a few pillows and blankets. ‘Almost any fabric can be used as a curtain provided it has beautiful drape. Best quality curtain lining and interlining materials give a luxurious finish, enhancing the beauty of the fabric and accentuating shape and fullness,’ says Lee Clarke, Director at Warner House.

Step One: Keep It Simple

How your window dressing looks from the inside is just as important as its functional qualities, such as blocking out the light or wandering eyes. And one window covering that can tick all the above is a Roman blind. There's a growing number of smart curtain ideas to try in the home, no matter your budget. These lapis-blue taffeta curtains, swagged and edged with an accordion-pleated ruffle, finish this Miles Redd–designed Connecticut living room with elegance and are a nod to design legend John Fowler.

Stylish Window Treatment Ideas That Dress Up Interiors in an Instant

It’s up to each homeowner’s personal preference to install window coverings or treatments. Sometimes, it's best to do what feels natural—like incorporating organic textures in this Scandi-meets-beachy space. The woven seagrass blinds add tons of visual interest to the space, without blocking too much light, thanks to their open-weave construction. Valences are a window treatment option that comes and goes throughout the years—but personally, we're firmly on the side of Team Valence.

Window treatment ideas – 30 ways with curtains, blinds and shutters for every room

The most well-known style of modern design is mid-century modern—seen now most often in the revived version of that style which is so prevalent today. Here are some elements to consider before buying new window treatments. In a neutral, airy space like this, color-blocked curtains strike just the right balance between bold and understated while quietly echoing the two-tone four-post bed. Most shades will, by necessity, have a bit of a horizontal stripe pattern. It's subtle, but it's something you can play with as part of your design scheme if you know where to look.

Specialty windows

"For this soothing primary bathroom, I chose sheer tonal drapery and recessed it into the ceiling, contributing to the overall ethereal quality of the room," says designer Marie Flanigan. "I love the way the translucent fabric let’s in light while still providing privacy." Decorilla emerged in 2010 when a group of passionate interior designers envisioned a platform to connect clients with top-notch design expertise.

Add a Delicate Touch to the Bathroom

Take advantage of all the colors, patterns, and textures of fabric to find exactly the right drapery for your room. The elegant design of shutters looks attractive from both the inside and the outside. They are also known as window sunglasses for their opaque design that allows you to preserve your outside view while also providing considerable light control. Available in openness factors ranging from 3- to 14-percent, you will want to choose a higher openness to let in more light and preserve your view. Several other window treatment options are also available which includes Cellular Shades, Wood Blinds, Faux wood blinds, Woven wood shades, Roller shades and many more. When most people think of modern design, they don’t think of drapery.

Protect Sunroom Furniture With Solar Shades

We asked Harry Cole, founder of Loom & Last how to deal with this tricky window treatment. In this three-bedroom London maisonette design by Gunter & Co, the bedroom has double doors which lead out onto a patio. Minimalism means letting a few elements stand out while the rest stay in the background. Their light colors, consistent light filtering, and even pattern make them ideal as a backdrop for contrasting elements. Cellular shades are also available in bolder colors if you choose to elevate them from supporting roles to lead performers.

This preserves the architectural details while offering light control and privacy. Every type of window treatment protects against light and provides privacy to some extent. Sheer or light-filtering fabrics will always allow some light through—which is why many people select these fabrics. For example, sheer shades and layered shades will let some amount of light through even when completely closed. But those looking for complete privacy and a dark room when the window treatment is in a closed position should look to cellular, roller, or tailored Roman shades in room-darkening or blackout fabrics. It’s important to remember that all of these shade options are also available in sheer and light-filtering fabrics.

Layer your windows with signature fabrics ranging from sophisticated silk blends and sheers to elegant velvets and jacquards. Bali Custom Drapery comes in hundreds of different fabrics, allowing you to pick precisely the right fabric for your design plan. A simple sheer curtain hung on a black-framed window has a lot of modern flair to it. Even an earth tone set against white walls can have a strong modern feel.

They also add elegant details to large spaces, such as a family or dining room. Although the best modern window treatments will differ from home to home – and from room to room – Katie Glaister from K&H Designs recommends choosing options that are mindful of the natural light. ‘There is such a variety of options available for window treatments nowadays, allowing way more to explore creatively,' says Claudia Afshar of Claudia Afshar Design. Whether one is dressing a more traditional space, or one that is more contemporary, coordinating colors and textures right is key to creating a beautifully curated room.

The white cellular shades in this example blend seamlessly into the space, allowing plenty of control without being distracting. By matching the floor-length curtains to the color of the walls, these dramatic drapes blend seamlessly into the space. A wall-to-wall curtain rod is also a modern touch, allowing the curtains to live exactly where you need them. The kitchen is one of the most functional spaces in a home, but it shoul be beautiful too! Whether you prefer a minimal aesthetic or a cozy and rustic charm, these ideas strike a balance between practicality and visual appeal.

The two-story home, he affectionately calls 'The Chuuuch', used to have three bedrooms but is now used solely to make music. Snoop's house hasn't always felt like his little slice of paradise though. In 2018, he found himself in a legal battle following some renovations to his family home. Photos obtained by Urban Splatter reveal the extensive exterior of the home that also features a huge swimming pool, spa, and an outdoor basketball court. Schroeder does not mind much when Snoopy sits against his toy piano, except when Snoopy dances on top of the piano, much to Schroeder's annoyance.

One of them was a perfect square to use as the base of the doghouse, and the second one had the wide sections for the roof peak. In addition, she wears a lace collar and sometimes wears a pearl necklace. He speaks in a chirping language that only Snoopy and his other bird friends can understand.

The four-bedroom, four-bathroom home features nearly 4,000 square feet of living space and sits on more than 2.8 acres of land in the gated community known as County Estates.

Peppermint Patty

Over the years, Snoop Dogg’s business endeavors have seriously paid off when it comes to the rapper’s career earnings. From hosting spots on television to music and more, it seems anything Snoop attaches his name to just adds another zero to his bank account. Despite the amount of space his home offers, Snoop snapped up a second property on the same street which he turned into a state-of-the-art recording studio. The rapper hired professional contractors to perform some upgrades to the property, but he was left so unhappy with the work that he sued them for $500,000, according to court documents obtained by The Blast. Snoopy's doghouse defies physics and is shown to be bigger on the inside than the outside.

This would be hard for little kids who are not great at cutting yet. Older kids should be able to do this part on their own. I simply used a glue stick to the tabs to keep the house together. Putting the sides together first and then gluing on the roof last. Snoopy’s home was where he indulged his Walter Mitty-esque alter egos, away from the neighborhood kids like Frieda, who wanted Snoopy to be a ‘normal’ dog and chase rabbit. At first it was a joke, meant to juxtapose his appearance with his behavior, but it became more normal as Peanuts treated Snoopy less like a dog and more like a human.

In the end, I attached the two pieces together with more packaging tape and just placed it on top of the smaller box as the roof – without gluing it down. I created the roof by using two longer sections of the second box. This also required that I cut them out separately so they needed to be glued together or something to create a peak.

Now you can get the top stories from Kotaku delivered to your inbox. Charlie Brown begins rebuilding Snoopy’s home, and this, like the suffering that came before it, is part of the healing process. There are logistics that go into Snoopy’s fresh start, but there’s also hope as the old foundations come down and new ones begin to appear in their place.

In later years, Sally occasionally enlists Snoopy's help in school assignments. She even treats him to an ice cream cone (a very tall ice cream cone, with scoops of about a dozen flavors) when Snoopy helps her get an "A" on a report about "Our Animal Friends". Snoopy appeared on October 4, 1950, two days after the first Peanuts strip. He was one of the four original characters, along with Charlie Brown, Patty, and Shermy. He was called Snoopy for the first time in the November 10 strip.

Either the entrance leads to an expansive basement with a few other rooms and ample storage space or the inside is a fourth-dimensional tesseract space. Either way the inside is much larger than the outside and contains many objects. Snoop Dogg’s branding game outside of his music career has always been on another level.

The doghouse changed alongside Snoopy; its roof became defined, and it nearly doubled in height. When Charlie Brown went outside to give Snoopy his supper, he had to crane his neck upwards to speak to his dog, who settled on the house’s roof. I printed out the Snoopy Dog house onto card stock and I cut out all the pieces.

For this project you will need two cardboard boxes, X-Acto knife or blade, ruler, red spray paint, a black Sharpie marker, packaging tape, and hot glue. Although normally Snoopy is the only one who lives in his doghouse, Woodstock and his friends stay with him, occasionally. Some other characters have stayed in the doghouse as well. In a storyline from September and October 1973, Peppermint Patty moves in to what she thinks is Chuck's guest cottage, because she needs a place to stay while her father is away. Linus chooses to move into the doghouse, although he calls it Joe Cool's dorm, as part of a May 1972 storyline in which Lucy throws him out of their home.

Dale’s mom came to visit last week and she’s been asking when we were going to have this cute little dog house set up (she’s a dog person but she loves her grandkitties with the best of them). In the cartoon strips, Snoopy’s doghouse has black lines drawn to show the boards of the doghouse. To create the same look, I measured equal spaced sections across  all of the pieces of cardboard and then traced the lines with a medium tipped Sharpie. The artistic style, colors, and genre of characters all add to the whimsical nature of these timeless cards. Snoopy's doghouse Fandom

In return, the birds somehow understand Snoopy's thoughts. In some strips, Snoopy can be seen telling a joke to Woodstock and both laugh so hard they end up falling off the doghouse. Woodstock sometimes sleeps on top of Snoopy's nose, such as in one strip where Snoopy says "Never share your pad with a restless bird". At first, Snoopy grieves the possessions lost inside the doghouse.

Snoopy has had television installed in the strip from November 19, 1951.

A place where the physical evidence of one’s experiences are collected — in display cabinets, or chests of drawers, or the dusty corners of attics. The doghouse’s original 1950’s iteration had the proportions of an actual doghouse; it was small and squat, with a roof scaled to its body. Even at this early date, Schulz made jokes about Snoopy’s inner humanity, but they were one-off punchlines. The doghouse was still a plain doghouse, and Snoopy — who still walked on all fours and did not yet have thought bubbles – was still a dog.

The following morning, he assesses the damage and finds the doghouse itself destroyed beyond hope. The house’s frame still smokes from the prior evening. Snoopy takes it in from all perspectives — it’s one of the rare times, during the Golden Age of the strip, that we see the doghouse from multiple angles. How To Make A Snoopy Doghouse Out Of Cardboard Boxes

My husband and I will usually go to the movies for date night and our kids love going to the theater to watch a movie with mom and dad. It’s fun to get excited to see our favorite characters from books, comics, fairy tales, etc. come to life on the big screen. My kids get excited to watch all the Charlie Brown movies during the holidays. They are ready to start watching the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving movie now that Halloween is over. So it’s super exciting that the new Peanuts Movie is opening today! A Snoopy dog house has a simple gabled design, and we have featured five plans on this list that will teach you how to build a Snoopy dog house and get you started with minimal effort.

If you’ve ever wondered how a dude like Snoop Dogg spends his millions – the answer is luxury cars! The rapper has acquired some of the priciest, customized, cars available on the market. Extensive renovations completed in 2006, the nearly 6,500 sq.ft home, features 8 bedrooms, 5.5 baths.

Rerun, the youngest child character in the strip, plays with Snoopy sometimes. In some strips, Rerun and Snoopy are playing cards with each other, both of them clueless about the rules. For an author who prized minimalism, Schulz went all-in on the final panel of the strip, creating a powerful scene of destruction. The doghouse was still a plain doghouse, and Snoopy—who still walked on all fours and did not yet have thought bubbles—was still a dog. Jackie felt we needed a little Snoopy and she was totally right! We picked up that little 18-inch Snoopy at the hardware store. We went to the store and acquired the proper flood lights, the chains, and (my big contribution) the “1st Prize” award. Dale set about making the star and the weathervane out of scrap pieces of wood.

They have step-by-step plans that are clear and concise and offer videos of each step that teach you how to build a snoopy dog house with ease. The skill level for this house is for a beginner and takes approximately half a day to build. Snoopy’s doghouse is so well-known and recognisable that even when there are no Peanuts characters in the frame, it is impossible to mistake it for anything else. The red, wooden structure has a distinctive mushroom profile, with three slats on the top and three slats on the bottom. When it burned to the ground in a 1966 story arc, Charles Schulz drew on readers’ familiarity with it to explore loss, mourning and recovery. Snoopy’s doghouse is so well-known and recognizable that even when there are no Peanuts characters in the frame, it is impossible to mistake it for anything else.

Snoopy's doghouse was first shown on September 4, 1951. It appeared again on November 19, 1951, when Snoopy first got television. In these earlier days of the strip, Snoopy treated it more like a normal doghouse. However, on December 12, 1958, Snoopy slept on top of his doghouse, rather than inside it, for the first time.

There have been other story arcs in comics about the loss of security and the loss of home. An early story arc in Calvin and Hobbes, where robbers break in while the family is away, is particularly memorable. Creator Bill Watterson considered Schulz to be a primary inspiration, and it shows. Finally, when she’s exhausted her meanness, she minimizes.

Spike's appearance is similar to Snoopy's, but he is substantially thinner, has a perpetually sleepy-eyed look, sports long, droopy whiskers that look like a mustache, and wears a fedora. He is called Snoopy's older brother during the first story in which he appears. Spike lives in the middle of a desert near Needles, California, mostly interacting with inanimate saguaro cacti and rocks. In both the early strips and the movie Snoopy, Come Home, Charlie Brown says that he got Snoopy after being bullied by another kid. His parents took him to the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm to cheer him up, where he met and bought Snoopy.

Please go to the Instagram Feed settings page to create a feed. Now I can easily collapse and pack up this miniature doghouse as two flat pieces instead of the assembled doghouse. So the cardboard box now looks like this right before I used a can ofRustoleum Spray Paint in Red Apple Gloss to transform it. After opening up the entire small box to lie flat, I used a ruler to find the center point of the shorter flap and created a triangle roof pitch with a pencil to cut out using the X-Acto knife. If you have a good pair of scissors those would work too. We do like how he is compartmentalizing functional space in this one big room.

However, this dog house will not hold up in the rain or snow. But this is a great way to give your dog some shade during the day after they are done playing in the yard. Lowes has a simple dog house plan that with a coating of red paint, could look like Snoopy’s dog house. Their plans are concise and the instructions simple to understand. It is designed for average-sized dogs, but you could easily scale it up or down to accommodate your dog. This dog house could be built by someone with very little carpentry experience, since the instructions are so detailed.

The best Carnival Cruise Line itineraries: 5 great places its ships go

reddit carnival cruise

Carnival sails all around the Caribbean, Bahamas, as well as trips to Mexico and Alaska, among others. The cruise line’s famous motto is “The Fun Ships.” In other words, if you’re expecting a stuffy, luxury-focused liner with caviar and champagne, this isn’t it. For more specific details on Carnival and what it’s like to sail, keep reading. Still, you might be wondering if Carnival is the right cruise line for you.

One nice perk is that some are open for lunch for free, while charging for dinner. Head over during lunch and you can get a free meal instead of having to pay. Specialty Restaurants (Extra Cost)In addition to the free dining, there are also a number of specialty restaurants where you’ll pay extra to eat. Main Dining RoomMany of your meals in the evening will likely be in the main dining room. The menu changes each night, but keeps classic dishes in rotation no matter when you visit.

Bring your own beverages

When you’re spending an entire week on a cruise ship, it takes a lot of options to keep things entertaining. Already we’re seeing Carnival do exactly this with the recent launch of the world’s first roller coaster at sea on its Excel-class ships. Still, more things to do — both big and small — would be ideal across the fleet.

How much does a Carnival cruise cost?

Once per cruise, often on the last sea day, Carnival's room stewards really work their magic by "taking over" the pool deck with their towel animal creations. Carnival cruise ships provide the bare minimum of toiletries — bar soap to wash your hands, dispensers of generic shampoo and body wash in the shower. If you want to make the most of your time on board, choose an early arrival time by checking into your cruise as soon as possible. That way, you can be one of the first people on board and have extra time to make reservations, eat lunch before the crowds come and enjoy top-deck attractions before everyone else discovers them. Like many cruise lines these days, Carnival attempts to make the boarding process less chaotic and crowded by assigning cruisers boarding time slots – usually half-hour windows.

Earn more on your purchase when you pay with a rewards card

During the summers you’ll see more families sailing while longer cruises during the school year tend to draw older passengers. It's a fun-at-sea focus that has gone to new levels over the past two years with the debut of Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, each of which has — get this — a roller coaster on the top deck. At 800 feet in length, these aren't the biggest roller coasters ever. You'll find at least one of its ships sailing out of pretty much every major port city around the country. Carnival is one of the world's biggest cruise lines by passenger capacity, with 25 ships that together offer nearly 80,000 berths.

Most Carnival ships have self-serve launderettes on cabin decks with washing machines, dryers, irons and ironing boards. The launderettes also have vending machines that dispense small boxes of detergent and water softener at $1.50 per box. On most ships, smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is only allowed in designated outdoor areas and in casinos and nightclubs. On Carnival ships in Australia, smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas. Note that it is important that the name on your reservation be exactly as it is stated on your passport or other official proof of nationality. All this said, we recommend checking Carnival's website before sailing for the very latest on requirements.

SportSquareThe Carnival SportsSquare is an outdoor area offering a number of activities that are all game related. From mini-golf to yard games (bean-bag toss, soccer billiards, ping pong) to a ropes course and the SkyRide, there is lots to do. Waterslides/WaterparkShips will often have waterslides or even waterparks. No one would confuse these spots with massive land-based parks, but they are plenty for kids on a cruise. One thing to note is that for pools and waterparks your kids need to be potty-trained before they are allowed to use the area. Popular ports of call here include Cozumel, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman.

Once per cruise, Carnival transforms a section of one of its main dining rooms into a Dr. Seuss-themed wonderland and invites families to dine on whimsical morning fare. However, if you left your phone in the cabin or your eyes can't take the small print, ask for a traditional paper menu. Purchase a Wi-Fi plan, and you can text, browse the internet and post to social media. However, you must remember to put your phone on airplane mode as soon as the ship sets sail.

Take advantage of drive-to cruise ports

Carnival ships are all about fun in a very laid-back, unpretentious, nothing-too-fancy sort of way. Half Moon Cay, Carnival's private island in the Bahamas, is a great stop for a beach day. Its shores are full of soft, white sand, but there's not much shade to be found for those of us who burn easily. Carnival puts special emphasis on live music, and you can often find a solo artist or small ensemble performing in the atrium, casino, bar areas or by the pool.

It's essentially a loan that you can pay back over up to 18 months. In general, booking cruises early is a good idea to lock in the best rates, as well as the best cabin availability. Here are 43 Carnival Cruise Line tips, tricks and hacks that you can use to get maximum enjoyment out of your first Carnival cruise or next vacation at sea. The typical Carnival cruise along the coast of Australia includes stops at Airlie Beach, Cairns and Willis Island.

A beverage package can be a great way to save on your bar bill if you typically order a lot of extra-fee sodas, beers and cocktails when you travel. Carnival Cruise Line has one of the most affordable beverage packages in the industry. Add it to your reservation before you cruise, and you can save 10% on the package price.

However, Carnival does allow each guest to bring 12 cans or cartons of nonalcoholic drinks (like soda, juice or seltzer), as well as one bottle of wine. You will be charged a $15 corkage fee if you wish to drink your own wine in an onboard restaurant or bar. Lanyards are ideal, especially for little kids, to keep your cruise card close when your clothes don't have pockets. Pack towel clips to keep your pool towel from blowing off your lounge chair.

BlueIguana is a Chipotle-style restaurant, with yummy made-to-order burritos and tacos. Created in partnership with Food Network's Guy Fieri, Guy's Burger Joint offers burgers that beat anything you'll find around the pool on other mass-market ships and even most luxury vessels. Every vessel has two main dining rooms and a casual buffet eatery where meals are included in the fare.

If you like pop songs by piano, the piano bar always attracts an enthusiastic crowd. Country, classical and covers — you can make your way through the musical gamut as you bar hop at night. While some perks may be delivered to your cabin (such as souvenir gifts and special event invites), others you may need to seek out. Read up on which perks you're eligible for and be sure to take advantage of the money-saving offers.
