Not only is the beautiful craftsman style Gamble house an amazing place to visit for architecture fans, but movie fans will appreciate it too. The garage was used as Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future and the living room shown above was used in Zathura. I have visited the house for free on two different occasions. You can visit it for free on the Museums of the Arroyo Day or during the City of Pasadena’s ArtNight. He is cautious in life and careful with his words, making him particularly well suited for the inflexible structure of DICOMY. Early in the novel, he is unexpectedly summoned to a personal meeting with Extremely Upper Management, elusive figures that are often whispered about but rarely seen. At the meeting, Linus is given top secret clearance to review an unusual orphanage run by Arthur Parnassus. It lodges six children who are considered “extreme” cases.
Linus's assignment is to assess a special orphanage on the island of Marsyas. The master of the orphanage is a man named Arthur Parnassus. There are six children living in the orphanage there, one of whom is called "Lucy" (short for Lucifer), who is the Antichrist. Linus Baker is a lonely case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth ("DICOMY"), a governmental organization which manages orphaned magical beings who are minors. His job consists of visiting orphanages to check up on them and then writing up a report.
Some of these children have powers such as telekinesis, and some are from non-human species, many of which we would consider mythological. Linus’s job is to follow up on incident reports and make suggestions regarding the fate of the children and the homes. There's also Zoe Chapelwhite, an undocumented, adult island sprite who has lived on the island since before the orphanage. She helps to take care of the children in an unofficial capacity.
Linus is scared of the children at first, but soon sees that they act much like other kids. Arthur tells Linus that people see the kids as being threats, but actually the kids can be anything they choose to be. Meanwhile, the kids are scared that Linus will take away their home, since he will be making a recommendation whether to shut down the orphanage or not. The Sowden House, like The Derby House, was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926.
The hollyhock was Aline’s favorite flower and was used as a theme throughout the house. Even if you cannot tour the home it is visible from the park and the city views are wonderful as well. I recommend stopping by for at least a quick visit if you can. Once back in the city, Linus brashly defends Arthur, the children, and the home itself to Extremely Upper Management. He implicates Management in the discrimination and abuses of the system. Even so, they accept his recommendation that the home remain open.
You can tour the home (during non-covid times), go horseback riding, hiking, attend movie nights over the summer, and polo games. Will Rogers was a popular actor in the early days of Hollywood. In the 1920’s he bought land in Santa Monica and his 359 acres included some land that would later become part of Pacific Palisades.
